Get the Look: A Kid’s Room with Antique and Vintage Touches

Written on April 15, 2014 at 12:49 pm , by

TREND: A collected over time look for the home, even in kids’ rooms.

We continue to see a trend away from mass-produced and obviously new items when decorating, and that translates to all spaces in the home. Yes, even for kids’ rooms! There’s something wonderfully warm and homey about living among storied pieces with a sense of history, isn’t there? The dresser in the kid’s room above is most likely an antique, and several other elements in the room may be true vintage or antique finds as well, but you can get a similar look with the items below.

  1. Zebra Print Pillow, Pillows by Dezign
  2. Welcome to the Jungle Quilt, The Land of Nod
  3. Framed World Map, National Geographic Store
  4. Framed U.S. Map, National Geographic Store
  5. Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Armchair (DFAW) , Design Within Reach
  6. Ashby Dresser, Pottery Barn

Written on April 1, 2014 at 10:22 pm , by

TREND: Mixing different shades of the same color, in this case, pink.

Pastels always make a comeback for decorating in spring, but many embrace the delicate colors year-round. In the bedroom above, we have a neutral base with plenty of pink layered in, in several shades. The vivid tone of the curtains brings a lively energy to the room, and keeps it from feeling too light and floaty. To get a similar look in your own home, try the items below!

  2. Crystal Swag Chandelier, Shades of Light
  3. Square Louis Side Chair with Brass Nailheads, Ballard Designs

TREND: Ceiling medallions grouped on the wall as art.

This isn’t a new idea, but it is one that seems to be resurfacing and making the rounds again. They can easily be found online or at big-box home improvement stores, and they’re affordable (usually under $30, and often under $10). Choose your favorite color, get some paint out, and create a grouping of your own!

  3. Fypon Belmont Ceiling Medallion, Home Depot
  4. Ekena Lyre Ceiling Rosette, Home Depot

Creating a feature wall with stencils, or even doing a whole room, is another option to explore, and it has the bonus of being customizable and affordable. 1. Endless Circles Lattice Moroccan Stencil, Royal Design Studio
  2. Teresia Sheer Curtains, IKEA
  3. Ziggy Table Lamp, Crate & Barrel
  4. Mid-Century 6-Drawer Dresser, West Elm

Get the Look: An Eclectic Dining Room

TREND: Rooms that reference different styles and look collected over time.

Rooms that pull in different design styles and elements always feel warm and lived-in, and the eclectic look is a lovely one. The dining room, above, looks like it took plenty of time to come together, with care to mix just the right vintage and antique elements to keep things fun and fresh. You could pick up vintage Eames chairs at flea markets and on eBay or Etsy, and keep an eye out for the perfect old farm table. Scour the thrift shops for old landscape paintings and hang them on the wall, collage-style. Plants and flowers, plus natural decorative elements finish off the look.

Or you could take the shortcut and get the look with the items below!

  1. Gallery Curator Wallpaper, Anthropologie
  2. Round Capiz Pendant, West Elm
  3. Decorative White Coral, Williams-Sonoma Home
  4. Verdigri Bulb Pot, Terrain
